A medical professional who has completed medical assisting program from an accredited school and has cleared the certification examination through the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) for being able to work in clinics, physicians’ offices and other healthcare facilities, providing supportive services.
Depending on the needs of the medical facilities and the specialty area they work in, the responsibilities of a certified medical assistant may vary. They may have to perform a wide range of jobs including performing administrative tasks like billing, scheduling appointment, laboratory services and maintaining medical records. While in some cases, they may be found performing clinical and patient care duties like assisting physicians in routine checkup, drawing blood for test, recording vital stats and more. In short, a certified medical assistant performs both administrative and clinical jobs as asked by the healthcare facility they are employed in.
