General surgery is that surgical branch that deals with the surgical treatment of stomach, appendix, pancreas, bile ducts, liver, breast, colon, skin, trauma, tissue, thyroid gland, etc. A physician trained and specialized for treating and taking care of the patient before, during, and after surgery is known as a general surgeon. It requires the surgeon to have knowledge of emergency and intensive care, nutrition, anatomy, immunology, physiology, wound healing, and pathology as well.

After the completion of medical school, followed by five years of an accredited surgery residency program and obtaining necessary operative hours during the training, the physician can take the board certification test to become a general surgeon.
