The medicinal branch dealing with the anatomy, physiology, and disease of the eyeball and orbit is called ophthalmology. A specialist who receives training and education in ophthalmology is known as an ophthalmologist. They diagnose and treat surgical and medical eye diseases. From prescribing glasses, contact lenses to performing surgeries and implementing laser therapies, an ophthalmologist does it all. They also undertake academic research work on various eye disorders, focusing on their treatment procedures and diagnosis process. These healthcare professionals also perform corneal surgery, repairs traumatic eye injury and cataract surgery.

The various eye diseases that ophthalmologists diagnose and treat include dry eyes, macular degeneration, refractive error, eye tumor, excessive tear fall, etc.
