Also referred to as surgical nurses, perioperative nurses assist doctors and surgical teams in patient diagnosis, surgical procedures, tracking medical history, and all other necessary details. These nurses work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as nurse anesthetists, surgeons, nurse practitioners, anesthesiologists, technologists, etc. They perform a variety of responsibilities apart from caring for patients undergoing surgery or are supposed to go through the surgical process.

From educating patients to maintaining surgical equipment and keeping the surgery room clean and sterile, perioperative nurses take care of everything. They monitor patient’s condition during and after surgery, advises them on how to overcome anxieties and fear, and also guides them on how to cope up with pain and how frequently they need to clean the operated area. In order to become a perioperative nurse, the candidate must complete a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from an accredited college. Also, after completing education and training, they will need to pass the NCLEX-RN examination and acquire state licensure to gain practical experience in the field.
